Vandalism British Cemeteries in France
Over the weekend of 26-27 July, 45 headstones were knocked over in St Aubert British Cemetery (total burials 435), near Cambrai in France. Later that week there were similar incidents at Le Quesnel Communal Cemetery Extension near Amiens where ten headstones out of 72 were targeted, and at Tranchee de Mecknes north of Arras, a mixed cemetery of 372 burials, where five Commonwealth headstones and six French crosses were overturned. The damage at all three cemeteries has now been repaired.
The attacks, which appear to be nothing more than mindless vandalism, have been widely condemned. The Commission particularly welcomes the prompt apology issued by the French authorities and the rapid response of the French police: several individuals are now being questioned in relation to the incidents.
